Origin & Taste
While chocolate comes from cocoa beans, carob chips are made from the pod of a carob tree. It takes about six to seven years for a carob tree to begin producing pods. But once they mature, they’re quite prolific and get busy pumping out pods. Inside the pod is sweet pulp that is dried, roasted, and ground into a powder. Usually, carob has a nutty, roasted and sweet flavor with earthy notes. It is 'lighter' in taste, resembling something like hot cocoa made with water instead of milk.Nutritional Content
Not only is carob free of the toxic compounds found in chocolate, it also touts a moderate amount of fiber, potassium, and vitamins. Carob is high in vitamin B2, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Carob also contains vitamin B1, niacin and vitamin A.Carob Vs. Chocolate
Carob pods and cacao beans grow on completely unrelated trees. The chemical composition of the two plants is also vastly different. Cacao, even in its purest form, is calorie dense and high in fat, whereas unadulterated carob has no fat. Chocolate contains two stimulants, theobromine and caffeine which are toxic for dogs, whereas carob contains neither, that's why it's perfect asn treats!
